The artist has a lot of works where incredible lighting effects were used, which are so characteristic of some natural phenomena, as well as times of the day. The master was very fond of sunrises and sunsets, moonlight and sunlight, as well as the special effects with which the nature of the mountains is so generous.
The specific light and the incredible feeling of spaciousness, so characteristic of the mountains, are reflected in many paintings by the master dedicated to the Caucasus Mountains. One of them is a small picture painted in an unusual technique – oil paints on a sheet of paper.
Despite the fact that the canvas is very modest in size, it depicts the majestic Mount Elbrus, whose legendary snow peaks attracted many different people. In this picture, the master used saturated, almost open colors that surprisingly accurately convey cold space and a special, clinking air from cleanliness. The handsome Elbrus lies in the distance, occupying all the space on the horizon. At its foot lies a green fertile valley, along which a river snakes through a thin, blue snake. With the general cold gamut of the canvas, the rocky ledge, bathed in warm sunlight in the foreground, sharply contrasts. Unlike the rest of the image, made with large, sweeping strokes with a wide brush, this small area is carefully designed. It is made using a large number of different shades. You can literally physically feel the meager, but green grass, desperately clinging to skinny soil in the crevices of the rocks.
It was from this elevated site that the artist painted his immortal picture. Only this small fragment seems warm and cozy, the rest of the image, located in the distance, looks very clean, non-residential and very elevated, as if in the mountains you actually become much closer to heaven and god."
